Close-Up Tree Bark

Centipedes

What to look for

Yellow, orange, or red, multi-legged, and fast moving. Can vary from 1cm to 3-4 cm in size. We're leaving aside the large tropical species here.

Why and how they turn up

These will come in with untreated wet bark or leaves, or if you make substrate using untreated soil from your garden.

Danger level

Centipedes are venomous predators that can and will eat both adult and young isopods. The venom in the standard small species is basically harmless to humans but an infestation has the potential to wreak havoc on your isopod population.

Prevention

Freezing wood, leaves, and substrate can minimise them however the only way to 100% prevent them is to never use anything natural in your enclosure which isn't a viable option.

How to treat them

Catch and release is the only option. Although with how fast they move this will be tricky. It has to be done however as you truly don't want these to stay in your enclosure long term.
